The Car Umbrella – Covering the Basics

What is it?You may have read about a “car umbrella” online, or possibly you have seen one when you went to the store, or whilst working at the office. Your first thought was probably “Huh? What is that?” What is a car umbrella? It’s a cloth-based elemental protection system for your car. Working along the same lines as a regular umbrella, a tent, or a hat, it protects your car from sun damage, hail, rain, leaves, and bird droppings. It attaches to the roof of your car, and opens at the click of a button. It can be stored the boot of your car when not in use, however.

How does it work?Using the main suction cup, it is affixed to your car, and it won’t go anywhere. The patented folding structure makes setting it up easy enough, easily done by a single person (rather than needing a team of people to cover your car with a tarpaulin). Once attached to the rood of the car, all you need to do is press a button and the frame opens out and covers your car. Once open, there are straps and hooks that you can attach to the door frame for added stability in windy conditions. Because of the “dead air” space made by the frame between the cloth and the car, it doesn’t matter how hot the cloth becomes, the heat won’t be transferred to the car. Once you’ve completed your business, simply unhooking the frame and then pressing the button will fold it up, and you can store it in the boot of your car.

What are the benefits?The main benefit to using a car umbrella is naturally, protection from the sun. The sun is one of the main damaging factors when it comes to your car, both because of the damage to the paintwork, and because it heats your car up immensely. When a car is heated up, the paintwork will fade, and become brittle. However, when the inside of the car heats up, the heat interacts with any and all plastic items in the car, releasing airborne carcinogenic particles. By using a car umbrella, the heat of a car can drop from 78® to 42.5®. This drastic drop in heat makes climbing into your car after a long day at work more pleasant, as it won’t be like stepping into an oven.

Another benefit to having a car umbrella is protection from bird droppings, and falling items from trees. Because of the curved shape of a car umbrella, sticks and seeds will bounce off the covering and fall to the ground without damaging the umbrella, or the car. Bird droppings will dry quickly and be easily dusted off, without sticking to the surface of the cloth.

As the frame is made from military-grade fiberglass, the weight is virtually nothing, and so it is easy to stick on the roof of a car, and carry around if you need to.
